The Mridangam is a percussion instrument of ancient origin. Over the years, the Mridangam was made of different kinds of wood. It is a double-sided drum of Southern India. The two heads are made from animal hide, it’s where the sound comes from. Its body can also be made using a hollowed piece of jackfruit wood.
Artists tune the instrument by varying the tension in the straps. This is done by placing the Mridangam upright. Mridangam is widely used in Carnatic Vocal/instrumental converts, Jugalbandhis, western fusion concerts, etc. It is also used to lay in certain movie songs. Mridangam is the primary accompaniment instrument in an ensemble widely used in Carnatic music performances all over the world.
